It really seems as though Australian singer-songwriter Julia Jacklin cannot put a foot, note, or wistful vocal pitch wrong as we encounter yet another country-tinged alt-rock narrative from the Blue Mountains talent. As the b-side to ‘Eastwick’, ‘Cold Caller’ very much sounds like a continued conversation, with the same rising and falling melodies and reality check lullaby lyrics. The country music influence is arguably at its most potent here, with the here’s-my-story-and-I’ll-tell-it-how-it-is presence of many a golden country singer, but with modern motifs. Her honesty is met with a mighty chord progression that travels further and further in rapturous riffs, backed by concise drums and Jacklin’s never straying vocal beauty. - HT
